Description: gold plated sterling, rhinestones. The wings move upward on a sprung mechanism, which moves the spikes on each wing apart, so that they can attach to clothing when the wings spring back down.
Marked: unsigned
Reference: Patent is reproduced below (scroll down); designer Adolph Katz, filed Jan 1947, granted Feb 1948. The spike spring mechanism seems to be based on a DeRosa patent of 1935, for which see Brunialti, American Costume Jewelry - Art and Industry (2008) Vol 2 p 160, a small pave DeRosa butterfly, and the patent.
