Reference: Patent is reproduced below (scroll down); designer Adolph Katz, filed July, granted Dec 1945. These pins are a competitive response to similar 1943 Trifari pins (see TKF5529). Brunialti, American Costume Jewelry - Art and Industry (2008) Vol 2 pp 132-133 (with reference to the Trifari pieces) that they are based on keepsake wool or silk figures given by the French to infantry departing for the front in World War I, reviving the tradition in the next war ••Reference Links - tkf5529
